Volunteers for Handi-riders are needed in many areas. The greatest need for volunteers is during our lessons. During lessons volunteers serve as either leaders or sidewalkers.
Leaders are responsible for
the horse during the lessons. They must
also work closely with other volunteers and the rider to provide the rider with
the greatest amount of independence possible.
Only experienced horse people will be used as leaders.
Sidewalkers walk along beside the rider to help with balance, following directions, attention to task, task completion, etc. The sidewalker becomes an extension of the instructor.
Tutors are needed
for the Ride,
Read, Succeed
program. Anyone interested in becoming a tutor can contact Handi-Riders at
(605)362-5830 or email at Handi-Riders@svtv.com. Licensed teachers, those
with teaching experience, or those training to become teachers are preferred.
Volunteers should be a minimum of 14 years of age,
physically able to walk for 45 minutes, and able to make decisions in an emergency
situation. Volunteers generally commit
to a specific time each week. However,
we also have a need for individuals to fill in should a scheduled volunteer be
unable to attend. This is perfect for
someone unable to commit to coming weekly, or for someone with varying work
hours.
Training sessions are required annually for all
volunteers. See our Events
Calendar for any scheduled training session. We
usually have sessions in May, but can schedule an individual session should you
be unable to attend one of these.
In addition, we utilize volunteers in many of our
fundraisers.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, you can e-mail us or call us at (605) 362-5830.
