Ride, Read, Succeed is an extension of Handi-Riders, Inc. targeting children that are at risk due to low reading ability.  Qualified tutors meet with each student twice a week for 45 minute tutoring sessions.  Following the first session of the week, the student will work with barn management:  grooming horses, feeding horses, cleaning tack, learning horse colors, etc.  During this time students will be practicing following directions, sequencing, responsibility, fine and gross motor skills, working independently, working with a team, and other similar skills.

When the rider returns for the second lesson of the week, following the tutoring session the rider will receive a horseback riding lesson, providing the assigned lessons for the week have been completed.  If the assignments have not been completed, the student will complete them during the riding lesson time.

During the riding lessons, the riders will be concentrating on learning to ride horses, but they will also be working on following directions, working as a team,  sequencing, cause/effect relationships, speaking in complete sentences, vocabulary development, and the list goes on and on.

Why is this better?

Kids with reading difficulties have generally failed many times in the classroom.  We take the child out of the classroom into a completely different setting. Additionally,  we have a built in incentive to complete assignments (the riding lesson),

Who are the tutors?

Our tutors are highly trained in the area of teaching reading strategies.  The tutors work with the riding instructors to achieve goals selected and individualized for each student.

What is the cost?

The cost is $20/tutoring session.  There are 18 total sessions.  The child is allowed to miss up to 2 sessions free.  The remainder will be paid.

The riding/barn management sessions will cost $300.  However, there are fundraising opportunities available to help pay for this, and the payments can extend past the summer session.
